A "by the way" additional thought: I live in the wokest of the woke-ass deep blue zones, and when my small town school board voted to return to in-person schooling, so many parents showed up to give public comment that the meeting ran past midnight, with a huge crowd still waiting to speak. So they....

....adjourned until the next night, then came back again to a second meeting to make sure they heard from EVERY. SINGLE. PERSON. who wanted to speak. Then, and only then, did they vote.

It's possible. The fight for openness goes on.

Virginia is in the direct orbit of the Imperial Capital. This school board is merely expressing its open contempt of the citizens, an emotion that lives in the hearts of the ruling class in the Beltway for everyone who is not “them..”

They think the parents are scum and so are their children. Their only value is monetary. But, I don’t discount the pseudo sexual thrill the Board gets get from dominating and humiliating the public. They are beyond contempt.

I hope the parents pool their money and start buying billboard space to make their public comments really PUBLIC.

But, parents shouldn’t have to BUY billboard space to make their views known. That’s the purpose of the school board meetings.

I think your experience is the exception that proves the rule. A huge percentage of students believe restricting citizen speech based on content is OK. A high percentage of “Progressives” believe the same thing. The only left-of-center group that DOESN’T are 60’s liberals who supported the ACLU’s original purpose.

Chris, as far as you know has your (blue) town been open to parents' comments in the past? Cuz it's pretty remarkable that they scheduled a second meeting, hopefully they really were interested in hearing what parents were thinking (I wonder if some attending parents spoke against reopening schools, but even in a heavily blue area I'd imagine most parents recognize an epically awful brutally bad train wreck policy when they see it adversely impacting their own kids, and not just the kids living in, say, a US border town or Martha's Vineyard for those recent brutally terrible 48 hours, before the national guard parachuted in to restore sanity to this lovely quaint little seaside town, may I recommend sipping a yummy pumpkin spice latte from Elizabeth's as you search their bright sandy beach for sea glass! Not at all, and to a surprising degree. We're a small town with an affluent center of historic Craftsman homes, a half-mile from a giant hospital, so the town has a disproportionate number of doctors. The doctors were the parents who turned out to say OPEN THE DAMN SCHOOLS, YOU IDIOTS. Several pediatricians saying they were treating many more children for depression and anxiety than they did before the lockdowns, but that Covid-19 was meaningless for children.

The best way to screw them over is to enroll in school, and maybe a week or two into the year have a mass un-enrollment, with your kid never showing up. If you can get say 10% of a school to do this, it would really screw them up.

Expand full comment
Fukitol's avatar

You can but then your kid is "in the system" and you've rustled their jimmies so they'll take a very personal interest in whether your child is being properly educated or, perhaps, neglected or abused. I'm not against fucking with vicious bureaurats and their petty fiefdoms but be very careful about using your children as bait. The CPS system is a kafkaesque nightmare and resentful school administrators often use it as a weapon.

Look. It’s no accident that these petty functionaries behave this way. Like everything else in this country, it’s no longer the phenomenon that counts, it’s the epiphenomenon. Eduction for the masses, which is why we have taxpayer funded public schools, it doesn’t matter. The schools fail at teaching math and reading and grammar. What matters is that the educational system provides the Left with the perfect opportunity to aggregate impressionable young people and indoctrinate them, get their fellow travelers jobs, control large pots of money which they can misappropriate toward political ends, and create massive bureaucracies to strangle well, education. Not an accident. Everything is like this now. The military loses all its wars, spends lots of money and hires lots of bureaucrats to make rules while they lose wars and waste your money. The border patrol does what now? The treasury does what exactly now? The Congress, the courts, and all the three letter agencies do what now?

They hate you, waste your money, are incompetent and malicious, try to damage you in whatever way intersects with their nominal chartered functions, and ignore your concerns.

You can’t negotiate with people who hate you. You can’t emerge victorious when you get the crumbs once in a blue moon, while they get the whole cake all the time.

There are maybe 5 million of these people in the country. There are 330 million of us. They are destroying the country with maybe another I don’t know, let’s say 1-2 million in media, university academics, and Hollywood. They are literally destroying America. It is not accidental. It is purposeful. If you aren’t in a public “school” in Baltimore, you can do the math. We take back our freedoms or we are slaves. There is no in between. Sorry, that’s the reality.

Fukitol's avatar

They're not wasting your money. They just have different priorities than you do. Toward those priorities the money is well-spent. Want to know what the priorities really are? Just ignore the labels and stated purposes and look at the outcomes.

Expand full comment
Tanto Minchiata's avatar

You are absolutely correct. All behavior makes sense in context . But the uses of the monies do not correspond to the original mission of a given agency or department. And much of the money is spent on illegal activities. The border policy of the Biden administration is illegal. The suppression of free speech by the government is illegal. Again, more and more of what time and money are used for by the government, breaks the nation’s laws and damages the citizens.

Expand full comment
Fukitol's avatar

Worse yet, often the lie is in the original mission statement. Whenever you feel the need to ask, "why aren't they doing their jobs?" check that their job ever was what you've been lead to believe it is. The FBI for example is functioning as intended from the get go.

You could strike but not familiar with that state’s law, truancy charges, CPS and whatever the demorats in charge can fake up -and will do the 1/5 plan on parents - cost you the parent a million in lawyers and take 5 years to prove it was illegal. Play their game but better and where it hurts starve them of money-nothing says after they eat owl shit and wake up (the school district) and change their ways reenter the kids if you want. But so many great homeschool support and options now. It is all too centralized and little taxpayer money pits and fifedoms - need one room schoolhouses in each subdivision with cameras for videos and sound for parents to monitor at all times.

So frustrating. There must be expensive and timely lawsuits, but there are winning in some of thse things across the country. There should be an absolute limit on the number of teachers signing up to speak.

Our city assembly continued having meetings during the lockdowns without the public able to attend, except via zoom, which doesn't accommodate everyone. These people will be voting the way they want regardless of public commentary and they hate having to sit through it, now they don't have to! We had one assembly person say, "Sorry, folks, we are going to vote the way we were going to vote regardless of what you say!." MERIANNE JENSEN: My name is Merianne Jensen and my address is on file. I know there are many educators who want to protect children. This goal is not different from my own. Our implementation preferences may differ, but we want the same thing, to get through covid without harm. Unfortunately, politics leads us to believe there is only one solution, masks.

Yet thousands of schools around the country have been open during the entire pandemic without masks, and no corresponding rise in serious illness. There were not child coffins lined up as some educators in this county suggested would be the case.

In fact things have been going pretty much as normal. Kids are getting sick despite wearing masks. We are forcing healthy children home for [makes air-quotes with fingers] exposure, despite them wearing masks. And we are segregating children by vaccination status and religious exemption status—

WOMAN'S VOICE: [unintelligible]

MERIANNE JENSEN: — despite the wearing of masks. So I ask you, if masks work, why don't they?

[applause and cheering]

I'd now like to cover the facts, not policy as determined by the White House, not CDC recommendations, which I remind you is still policy, policy I might add that changes by the day without any basis in science at all.

So here are the facts that are available to any one of you.

Over the course of the pandemic 49,000 children have died of all causes, 331 of those were covid-related, yet we have turned kids lives upside down at school for what is essentially a non-risk.

Let's put that risk into context. Last year fewer kids died of covid-19 than have heart disease, cancerous tumors, suicide, homicide, and drownings. Have the protocols, have the schools stopped serving hamburgers and french fries? Have we put up tin foil on the ceilings to block power lines? Do we even address the growing incidences of suicide during the pandemic? No! We play politics with kids faces by placing restrictive fabric over their noses and mouths that the CDC itself has said don't do anything and it's for their safety.

This is asinine. This is blatant political theater and it needs to end.

[applause and cheering]

Finally, regarding that, and I need to point something out that has been bothering me. On November 15th of last year I had the privilege of speaking with Dr McDade* for 10 minutes following the CRT town hall meeting. During that discussion which was friendly and cordial, I asked what she, as superintendent could do to get the kids out of masks. Dr. McDade told me that she would if she could, but that her hands were tied by then Governor Northam's executive order mandating face coverings.

[loud groaning from audience]

And if it weren't for that, things would be different. Well, tonight things are

different.

[applause and cheering]

But I'd like to ask you Dr McDade tonight, what has changed? And what do you plan on doing now that your hands are untied? I'm in fact, I'm asking all of you to step up the way other leaders who have, and are ending covid restrictions by the day. What [hits podium with fist], when [hits podium with fist], will you, what [hits podium with fist], will it take?

You are on the losing side of history and it's time to make that right before these children now.

[applause and cheering]
