I realize things like "media bias" are somewhat subjective, but when I saw that Tomasky said "the right-wing media has more power than the mainstream media", I really felt like we inhabited separate planets.

If we start with including culture (pop and otherwise) as part of "media", obviously Hollywood and pop music are all liberals/Dems, and their lockstep endorsements are the least of it—when was the last time you could sit through a movie, TV show (esp the late-night "comedians"), or even an ad and not be pummelled with left propaganda (mostly in re race & gender)? The last James Bond movie had a black woman literally parachuting into scenes to tell James that he was an antiquated white man who needed to die asap!

Then if you also include almost anything emanating from American academia—articles, books, interviews etc—how much of it is just regurgitation of the Party line and reminders that everyone not on their team needs to be plugged into Adorno's Fascist-O-Meter and prepped for re-education? Just about every prof quoted in any mainstream article speaks with one voice in support of the Dems and/or the Social Justice agenda in the most overheated, hectoring fashion. (And don't get me started on Nature, National Geographic and the embarrassingly woke Scientific American!)

And then we get to the actual MSM: the major networks and their biased weekend shows plus CNN MSNBC and then the print depts for the Propagation of the Faith: NYT, WaPo, NPR, AP, NYer etc, who all coordinate their messages so precisely that they even use identical language.

I'm gonna throw a Social Justice Party slogan right back in Mike's face: “When you're accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression.” He and the rest of the liberal clerisy are so used to having total narrative dominance that even allowing other people to speak feels unfair and illegitimate to them. Liberals have locked themselves inside their custom ivory tower/safe space/rubber room for so long, they've simply lost the ability or vocabulary to debate opponents and defend their positions. Thus the endless performative tantrums...

They are at least correct about the power of the mainstream media. The age of the average viewer is 65, and I don't know how that's calculated/if they are lumping everyone inna nursing home or waiting room to come up with that figure. The other thing I don't know is if there's ANY youtube or tiktok videos that the kids are watching that has the perfect racial component and morality tales that must be included for a show to get made, or if it's just gripping tales, however short. And I'm old enough I would really like Hollywood to just join them and make entertaining stories.

I'm actually somewhat concerned about the mass deportation stuff. Most voters want the border tightened up. But according to exit polls, 56% of voters want most illegals in the country to be offered a pathway to citizenship. 40% believe most should be deported, and that's a large number, but I'm pretty sure it will decline substantially when a photogenic Latino woman and her 2 kids feature as the "deportee of the day" every night on the CBS Evening News.

It's not that we shouldn't do it. But we should proceed carefully on this issue. There's lots of low-hanging fruit.

Expand full comment

I don't think this is a hard trap to avoid; forcible deportation for the criminals, choke off the immigrant NGO industry and public assistance, and start jailing employers.

True story: California overwhelmingly passed a proposition that criminalizes theft again. The day after Election Day, one of my daughter’s professors said to the class, “They want to put people in jail who steal because they’re hungry.”

My daughter wanted to know what to say about this. I told her there’s nothing to say to a person like this. This person is mentally ill, and you can’t reason with a mentally ill person.

Expand full comment

Maybe ask them about the nutritional value of Louis Vitton? Just for kicks, though, since most are too far gone.

"How do you know why 'they' steal?" would be a good start.

"How is the grocery store owner or franchise holder recompensated for the loss of capital, revenue and investment that otherwise lost due to theft?"

"How much of your salary do you spend every month on buying food and distributing it to the homeless?"

Be aware, your daughter's professor is likely to see these as hate-speech and verbal assault, and may retaliate in some way, especially if the professor is female. Older women do not handle being put on the spot by younger women well at all.

Even the complaining is performative...but I do enjoy it.

We used to poke at each other for years, but now that is not even fun. The responses from a two of my 'buddies' got very personal very quickly...like I cannot talk about govt corruption if I have a govt pension.

The whole Western world appears to be suffering from the same fundamental malaise. There is a rural/urban split.

Our cities are full of people who haven't a clue where their food comes from, why the lights come on when they flip the switch, or water flows when they turn a tap. Or where the sewage goes when they flush. And it is from those benighted urban bastions of ignorance that many, if not most, of our decisionmakers are drawn. The decisionmakers who are oh-so-certain they know what we should do, and how we should do it. And are very willing to tell us so. At length.

Inhabitants of rural regions, on the other hand, raise, process, and transport food. To those same cities. And mine the minerals, and harvest the timber to ship to the cities to build infrastructure. And keep the lights on, the taps running, and the sewage flowing downhill. And resent, like Hell, being told what, when, and how to do all of these things. By people who have no idea what it takes!

One wonders, in one's less optimistic moments, is there any way to bridge this chasm of ignorance?

Expand full comment

I notice that trend everywhere. I live in Calgary, Alberta which thrives on oil&gas development and has been hammered economically by climate policy emanating from our current left wing federal government. Even here the closer you get to the urban center you find people actually supporting said government or swinging even futher left. The suburbs still lean Right, and of course, small centers away from the city are reliability right of center.

The people who do for a living will exit, leaving only those who do not. Eventually the large cities will either learn or collapse.

The parallels with “Atlas Shrugged” are just too great and growing.

The liberals’ screwup is that they acceded to the Marxists’ objectives and have gone after cultural institutions rather than sticking to economics. Even city dwellers know that women don’t have penises.

We live in different worlds – in East Tennessee, someone attacking your house with a deadly weapon capable of penetrating it may be dispatched to the hereafter though the door. As we live in the mountains and wild animals (including bears) routinely roam through our acreage in front of the house, I keep a .357 Magnum revolver on the table in the foyer. As we live 30 minutes from the sheriff’s office on town, it’s there for 2 legged animals as well.

Under our older self-defense laws (pre-1990s) we had what amounted to stand-your-ground, more or less. The attacked party was not under any compulsion to try and flee or evade if they were at home or pretty much anywhere indoors, or if a third party would be endangered.

It was a very straight-forward law, and the court would take all factors into account, including previous history of violence, crime, et c for either party.

A firearm however would have had to be kept in a locked security-locker, unloaded. But there was nothing preventing you from loading it and keeping it ready "just in case" if you suspected an intruder was about.

Now, you are supposed to leg it from your own home, if you can, and leave the vile scum free reign. There are men in prison right now, for having shot dead intruders who went for their families.

And the "feel" here in the woods is: "SGT". An abbreviation meaning "Shoot, dig, keep silent".

In Texas, where we lived for 30 yrs, pre-1995 there was a “duty to retreat” and carrying guns (other than for hunting) was illegal. In 1991 there was a mass shooting in a public cafeteria where 23 victims were killed and 27 wounded (link below). The adult daughter of husband & wife victims, became politically energized and successfully ran for state office on one issue: making Texas a “shall issue” state for concealed carry licenses. She worked relentlessly on the issue (the then Democrat governor vetoed 2 bills passed by the Legislature. In 1995, new Governor George W. Bush signed a 3rd bill into law. Liberals predicted streets overflowing with blood, while the reality was that illegal gun use (and other crimes) by licensees has been virtually nonexistent.

There is something perverse, no, obscene, about requiring law-abiding residents to flee their home to abide by the law. Swedish lawmakers must REALLY hate their constituents. They must think Swedes bear unimaginable societal guilt that can only be expiated by elevating the most violent criminals to a preferred position. It’s just sick.
