The list at the end of Ruy’s latest “Liberal Patriot” post bemoaning the Dem’s crack-up is characteristic of what he has stood for, for years. He’s not copying Trump; he’s telling his former compatriots they need to get back to their roots, and cut out all the postmodern woke crap, and be real Americans again. Go and read his stuff, and then tell me he’s not main stream American.

I've been trying to explain to my children (and myself, frankly) how stunning this week has been. Trump took on every political dynasty in American politics we've endured for thirty years - Clinton, Bush, Obama, Biden - and beat them, one by one. He also managed to reinvent the party of Ronald Reagan in his own image, and in that party find room for a man (RFK Jr.) who brings with him the mojo of the most famous American political dynasty of all. When Trump won in 2016, my kids were much younger, and the only thing I could do to try and explain what happened (in their terms) was to say "This is as crazy as if we woke up and found out one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was elected President, and what's more it was Michelangelo." Now I find myself returning to the same analogy, only adding to it "...and then Michelangelo laid down his nunchucks to become the preeminent politician and statesman of our era." Pretty soon we're gonna have to take a break for a few years. I can't stand all this history happening all at once. Plus I have yardwork to do, and all this joy and schadenfreude is distracting.

Biden: "You got the vaccination? Are you okay? I mean, you seem…" "No, it works." Or you, you know — or the mom and dad, or the neighbor, or when you go to church, or when you're — no, I really mean it.

There are trusted interlocutors. Think of the people — if your kid wanted to find out whether or not there were — there's a man on the moon, or whatever — you know, something, or, you know, whether those aliens are here or not — you know, who are the people they talk to beyond the kids who love talking about it?"

Or maybe they know, but are still testing to find out what their "tribe" allows them to say?

To develop an example from Australian media (admittedly, government owned)...

Leigh Sales, a high-profile (and standard but not rabid leftist) Australian political journalist and TV host, published this very long piece on the Saturday before the election.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-11-02/kamala-harris-paths-to-win-us-election-over-donald-trump/104540990

It's all about race - until right at the end she acknowledges that, "Like the rest of the country, most Americans living in Arizona think the country is trending in the wrong direction. The big issues for the border state are immigration, cost of living and housing affordability — all issues on which the Democrat is vulnerable, given it's her party that has held the White House for the past four years".

Then she has the piece below published as they are still counting votes. It was written either before Election Day, or during it. It’s not the result of long consideration or rumination over all aspects that may come out in the next few days or weeks – she knew this going in (and it was all blindingly obvious anyway).

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-11-06/democrats-kamala-harris-challenges-against-trump-in-us-election/104567702

Economic pain, the obsessions of the Democratic base, the transition from Biden are now top 3 – as they obviously were to Sales before, but she couldn’t talk about them.

Racism and sexism come in at #4, get 3 lines and no evidence. Obama’s smashing wins and the movement of Black, Hispanic & Asian voters to Trump tend to give a lie to the racism argument. Sexism? Have a look at candidate quality.

Democrat campaign misjudgements and voter motivation come in #5 & 6 – again, it seems these were known to her but not able to be talked about before.

So – apart from being far too easy on Biden, and on Harris as a poor candidate (what do you mean, “she was never meant to be the nominee”?), Sales had a tolerable handle on the actual reasons for the defeat well before now.

So why couldn’t our experienced, courageous, hard-hitting combative ABC journalist heroine talk about them before? While she was obviously a supporter, what possible difference to any US vote could the opinions of an Australian political commentator, writing in Australia, have? None.

No - her problem was how she knew she would be perceived in her "tribe" if she'd told the truth as she saw it, before the election. And they're all now testing the waters to find out what is allowed to be said in the approved narrative, so they can fall back into line.

They know - they just won't say.
