These people are absolute mediocrities. But I suspect their histrionics (how can the insipid prose of these bureaucracy-brains rise to the emotional intensity of genuine histrionics? They've found a way!) arise from a very real unease. They know they're despised, that their credentials and offices and honors count for nothing with a vast swath of increasingly impatient people who have taken to largely tuning them out. Confronting the honest reasons for this would cause too much cogdis, it would require them to critically examine themselves and ask what they've done to deserve this disrespect from the deplorables. And they've done a lot. So they pretend they've done absolutely nothing, that they are doing nothing now, and forge ahead towards catastrophic societal rupture because any course correction would bring their entire world down.
They need to be removed from power.
While many are indeed mediocrities, some are very savvy. But note that many are not in power. A seat at a think tank is a merely a platform to bloviate while raking in six figures from (mostly) industry donations, at least in the defense industry. What should trouble you more is the tie to the Naval War College - no wonder the Navy can’t build ships if this is who is teaching their leaders. But you touch upon the nub of it: this is all about power. These folks have learned that the mob in the US now has real power. They know if they can fearmonger and incite it just enough, it will take the desired actions while they can virtue signal. Sweet job if you can get it.

The Threat of Civil Breakdown Is Real-Ha!
It's even crazier reading this if you live in Chicago and you were downtown last weekend when the kids were out wilding...I mean just enjoying the warm spring evening. Also, my 15 year old had a classmate shot and his brother killed over the weekend. But we'll be sure to get prepared for that right wing domestic terrorism that's coming.

Like ad-men pitching a product they know to be defective, they almost get to the point of mentioning the truth. A majority opposition that finds itself increasingly smothered by elitist institutions and deprived of civil means to affect policy has few options left to it. Like the protestors in Hong Kong, we are watching our rights get diminished daily in an increasingly draconian police state.
Additionally, they said the quiet part out loud when they mentioned "post Jan 6 crackdown" which has ensnared many more people and sought to oppress even more than just the participants in that event.
