Pickle didn’t reach the library, which is mean.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath hosted Pickle, or tried to host Pickle, for drag queen storytime at a public library in San Fernando on Wednesday. It went poorly:
Pickle is a respected drag artist, you monsters.
Los Angeles County has a $43 billion budget, which is overseen by a five-member board of supervisors. The supervisors spend their days going to drag queen storytime for young children with a man in a dress who calls himself Pickle. This, ladies and gentlemen, is America in 2023. If we do manage to start World War III, our military leaders will spend at least half of the conflict twerking with a DD-endowed male performer who goes by the stage name Bigg Peaches. “Yas, slay queen,” they will explain.
But here’s the interesting part. Remember that California is suing a school district over parental notification, and the news media is framing the effort as a battle between left and right — but polls show that overwhelming numbers of California voters, in a deep blue state, strongly support parental notification policies. The left-right conflict isn’t. Most California liberals don’t support the sexualization of childhood, and they don’t support school policies that keep secrets from parents.
Now, the news media watched as Lindsey Horvath tried to slip her Pickle into the library. They framed it as, guess what, an attack by the far-right, and here’s who a local newspaper photographed for the story:
Old, white, angry, American flag hat. See, right-wing protest. Trumptards! MAGAts!
But there’s also video, with other footage from the same person here, and let’s grab a few screenshots:
Scroll back up and watch the video yourself, if you want to check. San Fernando is working class and 93% Latino, and Spanish is the first language in most households. That’s who turned up to shout at Pickle, in a remarkably diverse crowd that appeared to have been minority white by a considerable margin. Working-class California Latinos mostly aren’t on the right. San Fernando is represented by Democrats in the House and in both houses of the state legislature.
So. Working-class Latinos, joined by black and Asian protesters, are not enthused by drag queen hour for children, which is then framed as right-wing white people being angry at progress. That’s not what’s happening. Whether or not this turns out to matter politically is another question, and my bet is that California effectively remains a single-party state. But don’t accept the framing. This was a minority-majority protest, from adults demanding the protection of childhood, in a 93% Latino community.
They don’t want your Pickle, Lindsey.
Those Sisters of Perpetual Grotesquetude make me want to puke every time I see them.
"Pickle is a respected drag artist, you monsters."
No, Pickle is not just a respected artist, Pickle is a DRAG LAUREATE, and don't you forget it. If there were a Drag Nobel, Pickle would be in the running for sure, first prize material, a million bucks.
They tried the DQSH in the tiny library nearby in Chester, Vermont, and it did not go as smoothly as they planned. One of the library board busybodies actually looked at the website of the invited queens and, even in our leftie state, was really unhappy with what he saw. He was concerned about children seeing that child-inappropriate website, assuming, correctly, that kids would surf on over. Result: entire library board resigned, library director who started the whole thing was let go, whole new slate of people in charge. Meanwhile, the local pizzeria invited the queens to perform there, so we get our pizza elsewhere.
