Field of Dreams is still one of my all-time favorite movies. RIP James Earl Jones
"Ray, people will come Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past...." -Terrance Mann (James Earl Jones' character) -IMDB
Thanks for this Chris. I am inspired to listen to him read KJV of the Bible. I finally read it through in 2023; Iโll get even more out of it hearing him read it in his wonderful voice. RIP.
The current culture is all about being angry about the current culture.
We got over the psychotropic sixties and seventies, we got over the coked up eighties, but weโve been in a doom loop with the SSRIโs and opiates since the mid nineties.
We're being warred upon successfully by principalities and powers. Among other things they appear to have done well is to squelch the remaining instincts of moral sanity and of patriotism which kept Our Rulers somewhat in line.
Thank you, Chris for this eulogy of sorts. i do miss those types of movies & actors like James Earl Jones. I don't go to the movies much anymore & I guess this is why.
Keep writing! I read everything you put on here & am in agreement with you pretty much all of the time. I have 3 people i read faithfully and you are one.
The baseball movies were definitely wonderful. But you forgot the greatest role he ever had. Thulsa Doom, The snake wizard in Conan The barbarian with arnold.
I was living and working with my family in Tokyo Japan in 1990-91. We were living not far from the Yakoda AFB in the Tama region of Tokyo. Right after Iraq invaded Kuwait in August of 1990, a non-stop parade of Galaxy C5 transports shuttled in and out around the clock. I could look out of the 12th floor of the office I was in during the day and see these massive planes circling enroute to landing.
It was a little frightening being in a foreign country while the country was gearing up for war. Television in English for us was CNN. In those days JEJ was CNN's VO "This is CNN" and I remember there was something about the deep intonation of his voice that was a comfort to both my wife and I.
When I heard of his passing, I remembered the CNN ID and smiled.
Every time someone brings up cancer I think about the whole Greer dying in the hospital arc and the magazines Han Solo would bring him in a paper bag, it was so damned good and stuck with me that well. I was actually sad as a huge Clancy fan watching it unfold on the screen. Him going to Ranger school is a new one to me though....that's awesome. RIP Darth!
It may not rank as his top performance for many, or as "real" cinema, but to me Thulsa Doom in the Conan-movie from 1982 is where my mind goes for James Earl Jones.
Especially the scene where he interrogates a captured Conan stands out, as Jones switches gears seamlessly in his acting and voice.
One of the all time great stage and screen performers, with perhaps the best voice in the history of cinema.
He will be missed.
RIP Willie "The Say Hey kid" Mays. ๐

Indeed.
Yes.
That is my dad's favorite movie. Gosh, I was maybe 5 or so when I first watched it? Now my dad watches it with my nieces and nephew.
We are from Iowa, so the movie is extra special to us. I can't watch that scene without tearing up. ๐ฅน๐ฅน๐ฅน๐ฅน

Before Ray, Alexander Scourby recorded the KJV in a similarly impactful voice. The trained human voice is a most powerful tool.
Will always remember Jones in Dr. Strangelove.

Negative function.

Yes, this.

I had totally forgot about that! I haven't seen Conan since the late 80s, early 90s!
Yes that was a good time there.
Sandlot, one of my favorites.
FOR-EV-ER
One of my favorites along with Morgan Freeman.
A wonderful and fascinating individual loved every movie heโs been, he holds a special place in Americaโs history.

He was somebody special, one of a kind. He could hold an audienceโs attention reading the phone bookโฆ
He was electrifying as King Lear in 1973.
Missed that!

Among his many accomplishments, Field Of Dreams stands out in my mind as the best of the best! He will be missed.
Especially the scene with the flower duster! โYouโre from the 60โs! (puff puff) Go away!โ
