I guess I spent enough time on two wheels on slickrock and four on fire roads in the mountains that very little gets under my skin where paved roadways are concerned. I'm generally in awe of roads in WA state, though most people seem to b!tch constantly.
We've had some of the most amazing civil engineers in history. There are old on/off ramps on 101 that are a real pleasure to drive with a manual transmission. You get through them without braking, just ease off the gas, don't even have to downshift unless some mobile goomba is ahead of you. 65 to 35 to 65 without any effort, the terrain does the rest, and the steering smooth as butter. The massive intelligence behind them is an honor to interact with.
Down in WA's capital city is an awesome Art Deco bridge designed by the amazing Clark Eldridge. It's a gorgeous damn thing, even with the hideous totem poles later slapped on top in the triumphalist manner common to those PC/DEI parts. Eldridge designed the first Tacoma Narrows Bridge, whose magnificent design was cheapened up by a "consulting engineer" from NYC, Leon Moisseiff, one of FDR's buddies, brought in to save money for the feds who were underwriting the project.
Eldridge warned that removing the stiffening elements would make the bridge more susceptible to flutter/oscillation from wind resonance in the Narrows. Other engineers and contractors backed him up.
Nobody listened. You know the rest.
There are about a half dozen other Eldridge bridges still standing. One that crosses the Columbia near Astoria has a patchy deck but is still in amazingly sound shape.

Another time, in a carload of aggie colleagues going from a conference at Apple to SC for a beach dinner, our driver came within inches of the divider/barrier, avoiding a furry hustling lump. It all happened so fast, in the dusk, we weren't sure what it was. Couple days later I made that drive for a meeting in Aptos, and on the roadside at that same spot was a dead bobcat. :^(

It also has nothing to do with not logging and managing our lumber crop, allowing it to burn at inferno temperatures, then importing lumber from other states and countries. It all has to be blamed on TRUMP! Funny, back in the OBAMA ERA, California minimum wage was $8/hour and gas was $5.45/gallon, as was the price of a gallon of milk! So, the price of gas in California is a better deal under Trump than it ever was under Obama!
It might have been more than that, given the first work on it (planning, site assessment) was in the early '00s, and work on it is ongoing. But you're on target re: magnitude of cost. And it was coordinated with other major highway projects in that area, which required a HUGE amount of coordination between dozens of parties. That's the real issue IMO--the part of any major infrastructure/logistics project that is HUMAN COORDINATION.
You can't have that without a well functioning public sector occupied by people who know how to work together. WA DOT is pretty good at that meta/upstream function overall.
I'm assuming that our I-90 project was what Wallis Annenberg heard about, or was told about, since it is a prime example of this civil engineering specialty, not just for its scale but for the remarkable creativity and technical understanding it represents (in so many fields).

Do you know what the Germans do on the autobahn? They make the regular bridges just a couple meters wider with a strip of grass along the side. Or they just bury a big ol' culvert under it.
I can guarantee that that's a lot cheaper than a dedicated wildlife bridge.
In the pictures, you can see an underpass very close to the bridge, how wo the cougar know which one to use!?!?! Maybe the state will hire wildlife crossing guards to point out the new bridge.
Well that's an easy one to answer...you just put up the ubiquitous "Deer Crossing" signs but change the deer silhouette to a cougar...Voila! Problem solved, please have California send me a large check for my wildlife consultancy LOL

yes. The higher cost to build, has nothing to do with the Socialists in California Government raising minimum wage to $20/hour! It also has nothing to do with not logging and managing our lumber crop, allowing it to burn at inferno temperatures, then importing lumber from other states and countries. The higher cost of building has nothing to do with Environmental regulations and propaganda, causing concrete plants to close or spend millions to reach new compliance mandates. It all has to be blamed on TRUMP! Funny, back in the OBAMA ERA, California minimum wage was $8/hour and gas was $5.45/gallon, as was the price of a gallon of milk! So, the price of gas in California is a better deal under Trump than it ever was under Obama!

It might have been more than that, given the first work on it (planning, site assessment) was in the early '00s, and work on it is ongoing. But you're on target re: magnitude of cost. And it was coordinated with other major highway projects in that area, which required a HUGE amount of coordination between dozens of parties. That's the real issue IMO--the part of any major infrastructure/logistics project that is HUMAN COORDINATION.
You can't have that without a well functioning public sector occupied by people who know how to work together. WA DOT is pretty good at that meta/upstream function overall.
I'm assuming that our I-90 project was what Wallis Annenberg heard about, or was told about, since it is a prime example of this civil engineering specialty, not just for its scale but for the remarkable creativity and technical understanding it represents (in so many fields).
I find it sad, but typical, how many commenters here are just indulging their taste for mockery and glib snipes, instead of reacting like white people with an interest in preserving and tending Creation.

And I’d be willing to bet (if the bridge ever gets finished), that anyone complaining about their dogs and cats and potentially small children being eaten by mountain lions will be scolded with, “they were here first, we’re invading their territory!” I see that all the time in east San Diego where we are overrun with overly aggressive coyotes. 🙄

We had lion in our neighborhood for decades. Nobody ever got eaten. Though there was one kitty about 15 years ago who loved tree-ing local hippies. I swear s/he did it for fun. Dumbasses would see Kot and run screeching and start climbing.
And kitty would circle the tree down below. Mewing low.
A friend actually observed this happen, and laughed his glutes off. Kot heard him, saw him, twitched tail, mewed low, and strolled off.
In my and my darling's and our neighbors' experience, that kot, when confronted or bumped into, either turned away or just purred curiously. Had a neighbor who'd see it on his dawn runs. Lying in a driveway. Watching from the salal. Neighbor would say, "Hey, Meow." Kot would reply, "mrow."
As for dogs and cats getting eaten, attend your frikkin domestic livestock. And remember, if they come on my land without invitation, I am the apex predator. And way more surly than any lion.
But oh joy we don't have to worry about lion anymore. California Carpetbaggers put an end to nearly all the old growth and wildlife around here. No more lion, no more bobcat, no more elk, spotted owls, coyote, bear, and we haven't even seen a fox in years.
